Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man with a compass rose centred on the navel

Manuscript Compass

Prepare. Submit. Revise. Together.

Prepare manuscripts, navigate journal and congress requirements, and research with colleagues.

Choose your research field

All modules share the same engine and the same functions: check a manuscript, respond to reviewers, change journal, congress submissions and research collaboration. Each module has its own name, its own version and its own catalogue of journals and congresses. You can change field at any time; your work in progress is never erased by a change of field.

Read locally in your browser. Your manuscript is not uploaded or sent. Independent tool, not affiliated with any journal, publisher or society.

About this catalogue

journals listed in this field (not exhaustive): . Manuscripts are read in your browser and are not sent to a server. Only if you tick the option, the entries of the reference list are sent to Crossref and PubMed. Independent tool, not affiliated with any journal, publisher or society; results are indicative and not exhaustive.

Your work in progress is kept in this page. Open the full workspace to see it.

    Journal and article type

Optional. Shows a methodological checklist with the results: what the journal asks for, the reporting guideline for this study type, and points to watch. It changes no limit and no check.

    Journal information & verification
AI use & disclosure — journal policy
Before submitting — checking a journal yourself

These questions follow the approach of Think. Check. Submit. (wording of this checklist: Manuscript Compass). They apply to any journal, including one that is not in this catalogue. They are not a score: no single answer proves that a journal is, or is not, trustworthy.

    • Identity. Do you know the journal and its publisher? Is the publisher named, with contact details you can verify?
    • Editorial board. Can you identify its members — real people, with affiliations you can check?
    • Peer review. Does the journal describe its review process: who reviews, how, and in what time?
    • Fees. Are all charges stated clearly: what they are, how much, and when they are billed (at submission, after acceptance, at publication)?
    • Archiving. Will the articles be preserved and remain accessible over time?
    • Indexing and memberships. Can what the journal claims be confirmed in the directories themselves (NLM Catalog, DOAJ, COPE…), not only from a logo on its website?
    • Consistency. Do the title, ISSN, publisher and website domain match each other in an official record (for example the ISSN Portal)?

An invitation by e-mail, a short review time, high fees or a payment at submission are not, on their own, proof of an abusive practice: several established journals and congresses charge a submission fee. Being listed in Manuscript Compass is not a guarantee of quality either: some entries are information only or partly verified. Manuscript Compass keeps no list of journals to avoid and gives no reliability score.

AI use & disclosure — your declaration (optional)

Have you used AI tools for this manuscript or the research reported?

Optional: the other checks run without it, and no answer adds nothing to the result. Your answers stay in this page and in your working package; nothing is sent.

Limits and counting options — pre-filled from the official rules

Limits and counting options are pre-filled from the official rules. A value you change is treated as a custom limit and shown as such, next to the official one.

Rules applied for this journal, article type and stage — with source, excerpt and verification level

    Your submission files

Files are read locally in your browser. Your manuscript and attachments are not uploaded or sent.

Drop your files here — manuscript, figures, tables, supplements — or

Several files can be added, in one go or one after the other, from different folders. The main manuscript alone is enough to run the check. Adding a file never replaces the manuscript.

The manuscript changed: the previous results and the decisions recorded under “Numerical consistency” were discarded. Run the check again.

Off by default. A separate confirmation is required for each analysis. If you approve, each entry of the reference list — and nothing else — is sent to api.crossref.org and eutils.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. The manuscript itself is never sent anywhere.

    Checks performed

    Limits of this analysis

All the limits of this analysis

        Journal requirements

        Official instructions and submission

The link opens the journal’s own site in a new tab. Nothing is submitted by this tool.

Journal requirements — every check against the rules of the journal and the article type, with its source

Not checked automatically — separate files, submission-system entries and items this tool cannot read

        Word count

Text attributed to each section — correct an attribution if a passage is in the wrong section; the checks are recalculated at once

Methodological checklist — needs your judgement: journal requirements, reporting recommendations and points to watch are listed separately; nothing here is verified automatically

Compare up to three journals — length overruns, excess references and missing elements only

The comparison applies each journal’s own counting rule to the same manuscript. It says nothing about scientific fit and does not estimate the chances of acceptance.

        Numerical consistency

Numerical consistency — consistency of the numbers written in the manuscript; not a statistical or scientific validation

            Files

Files of this submission — the same inventory as in “Your submission files”

Files are read locally in your browser. Your manuscript and attachments are not uploaded or sent. A file that is not added here is not thereby missing from your submission.

Figures, tables, videos and supplements — what the manuscript mentions, what the files added here contain, and what you declare: three different things

Use fictitious or already anonymised files. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Format, size and pixel dimensions shown below are those actually read in each file; a print resolution is not deduced from them. Anonymisation is not guaranteed by this tool: identifiers can remain in the metadata of a file or be visible on the image itself — check every image yourself. DICOM folders, PACS connections and uploads of examinations are not supported: this tool prepares a publication and is not a clinical viewer.

1 · Revision file — everything stays in this page; nothing is sent or stored unless you download the file

Word (.docx) and text files are read reliably; a PDF is read from its text layer, with a warning. You can start before every document is available: the checks that need a missing document say so.

2 · Requests of the editor and reviewers

Add a request by hand for

Source documents, with line numbers — to compare with the list

3 · Dashboard — counts only; no quality score and no estimate of the chances of acceptance

4 · Tracking matrix — request → response → evidence of the change

5 · Comparison of the initial and revised manuscripts

            6 · Points to verify

Add your own dependency to check (a term, a value, a figure label):

What is checked automatically, what is left to you, and the limits

              7 · Response letter

Responses come from the matrix: there is a single version of each. Internal notes are never included in the letter, the journal matrix or the printed matrix.

8 · Save, restore, check the revised manuscript

The file holds the header, the requests and their identifiers, owners, responses, statuses, internal notes, links to the evidence, and the name, version and fingerprint of each document. The text of the documents is included only if you tick the box. Either way it may contain confidential information.

Copies the revised manuscript into the first tab; nothing is replaced there without this action.

What do I need to change for this journal?

              1 Your manuscript

              Use another manuscript

              2 Target journal

              3 What to change

“Check for this journal” opens “Check manuscript” with this manuscript, journal and article type. Nothing there is replaced without your confirmation.

              Details and options

Word count as this journal counts it

Text attributed to each section — correct an attribution if a passage is in the wrong section

Detailed comparison of the requirements, with sources

              Journal of origin (optional)

Adds the rules of the journal you are leaving to the detailed comparison. Your manuscript is never assumed to comply with them.

              Transfer proposed by an editor

A transfer does not mean that files, reviews or declarations are carried over: nothing is assumed, and what to confirm is listed.

              Custom limits

Your own limits (for instance one given by an editor). They are labelled “custom”, shown next to the official rule, and never replace it.

Files of the submission and inventory

Only the name, size and — for images — pixel dimensions are read. Do not import signed consent forms: confirm their availability below instead.

              Save and restore this work

Holds the journals, article types, stage, custom limits, the actions with their follow-up, the list of files (name, size, category) and the name, version and fingerprint of the manuscript. The text of the manuscript and of the letter is included only if you tick the box; the other files never are. It may contain confidential information.
